July 27, 2022: Habit

Habit

Make excellence your habit in all things, small and large. And what are large things is not a sum total of many smaller things? Marathon is not just one big thing, it’s thousands of individual steps. Make sure you place your foot correctly and one in front of the other and repeat the process until you reach the finish line. I am a huge fan of breaking down huge projects and goals into smaller, more achievable pieces. This way, I don’t get overwhelmed. So look at your personal marathon and figure out your steps. Now perform every step to the best of your ability. In due time, you will do your big thing excellently!

So if you make it a habit to be excellent at every small step, you will be excellent in big things!

One disclaimer though: as much as excellence is important, don’t allow yourself to be so fixated on perfection that it prevents you from moving forward. Here is a great example: I’m a CPA and I know a lot of others who sat the exam. There was a group that would reschedule tests (there are 4 parts 😱) every time they thought they weren’t 100% ready. Over time, these individuals struggled with completing the tests (once you pass one, you have 18 months to pass the other 3 or you have to restart). People who chose to study every day may have failed sometimes, but they finished sooner. In these cases, excellence is not about being perfectly ready. It’s showing up and putting up a good fight.

Conclusion? Excellence is a habit. Employ it. But don’t let perfectionism stop you from moving forward!
